What did Get Flipped! Get?
February 6th, 2008 by Jan Norman
Get Flipped!, an Orange company that develops event photography software, has won the best new innovative event product/technology award from Special Events Magazine.
The new product is called Flip Zone, a strip of photos similar to the ones you get in a photo booth at the fair, except the images “move.” The photo subjects pose for two different photos for each of three cells on the strip. The finished film strip is an animated bookmark souvenir for the guests of the event where it was made.
Get Flipped! uses Pro-Studio software to capture two images and then interlaces them to print out one 3-D and lenticular photo. What? You don’t know what lenticular is? Think of those old baseball cards that you bent one way to see the player standing and bent the other way to see him leap to catch a ball.
Lenticular photography became quite popular in the 1940s and 1950s when these “magic-motion” images were used on everything from record album covers, greeting cards, political buttons and Cracker Jack prizes, according to Get Flipped! Chief Executive Raleigh Souther, a former LA Times photographer and editor.
The company Web site lists among its clients the MGM Grand Hotel, Mercedes Benz, Warner Brothers, MTV, Paris Hilton and Justin Timberlake.
“What is so unique about this product is the interactive component to taking the picture,” Souther says. “It’s as if the participants are making a mini movie, so they have to think of two creative poses that will go together and animate (such as blowing a kiss).”
Souther created the company in 2003 to use the software at live events. Get Flipped! has partners in five states and affiliates in Paris, Mexico City, Toronto and Alberta.
