Stars and common folk are captured by Orange company
Get Flipped! 3-D photos are for fun – and for security.

ORANGE Teri Hatcher hired Get Flipped! for her daughter's birthday party. The Concern Foundation had the Get Flipped! team for a charity event for children with cancer. Both times Get Flipped! was a hit.

A booth is set up. An employee operates a camera and a laptop used to incorporate two images.

Get Flipped! produces, in about two minutes, three-dimensional photos.

By tilting the hard-backed photo just a tad, the picture changes from, say, a portrait of a married couple to one of them kissing. Or two people pretending to argue in the first scene, and then one punching the other in the second. Or a black and white photo of a young couple that, with a tilt, changes to a color photo of the pair now, years later.

Get Flipped! has been producing the 3-D photographs since 2004. They can be made in the shape of bookmarks, postcards and ID cards to be worn around necks.

"We came up with an idea to create instant, animation photography," said CEO Raleigh Souther. "We also wanted something that creates interaction between people." Souther, 54, is a former Los Angeles Times photographer and editor. He quit to begin a career as an entrepreneur.

"I quit without a parachute, with no job in sight," he said. "I thought I could do better on my own, and I always wanted to give it a try."

It took some time getting accustomed to working with new technology and software. "It was exciting, being on my own," Souther said. "Then I thought, 'You gotta come up with something that makes people smile.'"

In the photos, children can pretend to be serious one moment and the next show their playful sides.

Get Flipped! has been featured at fundraisers and special events, including the 2008 premiere for the 3-D movie "Journey to the Center of the Earth." The company has been hired by companies like Anheuser-Busch, Disney, Mercedes-Benz, Warner Brothers and the TV show "America's Next Top Model."

Hiring the company for a two-hour event cost approximately $1,600, Souther said. During those two hours, the Get Flipped! booth supplies an unlimited amount of products.

There is another side to Get Flipped!
Artists like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears have hired it to create security badges for their tours.

"The technology and animation are difficult to duplicate, so it's very unlikely counterfeit badges can be created," Souther said.

Get Flipped! is based In his Orange house.

On Friday, Souther and an assistant went out to the Orange County Fairgrounds. This past weekend, Get Flipped! held fort during the 2009 Maloof Money Cup, a skateboarding competition. Here, amateur and professional skateboarders could stop by and have their picture taken by Souther and his crew and receive a "Flip Photo." The skateboarders got the photos for free; Souther used the competition as a way to advertise his company.

The next step for the company is making the 3-D photographs even more 3-D.
"It's not only about being an entrepreneur," he said. "It's about coming up with ideas. You have to have ideas to make it."
